Got a rejection letter in the post this morning. No interview, no nothing.

It was clear that you were really keen on this particular job. Don't give up looking though, there are other opportunities which might tickle your fancy.

Thank you both.
It's a mixed blessing that the first job I consider away from retail should seem so perfect for me (even if the SCO disagreed). Rather than being down in the dumps about it, however, I prefer to look on it as an excellent starting point. Something else will come up in due course.
